Hard to Fit Contacts at Our Plano TX Eye ClinicPlano TX eye clinic Eye Gallery optometrist determines whether you can wear ordinary contact lenses or might require hard to fit contacts instead

Over the decades, contact lenses have gone from an expensive, uncomfortable novelty to an everyday fact of life for countless Americans with uncomplicated refractive errors such as nearsightedness or farsightedness. But if your corrective prescription is more complex than usual or your eyes present other complicating factors, fitting comfortable, effective contact lenses can become a special challenge. But don't despair -- you can still enjoy the convenience and "invisibility" of high-quality contacts. That's because our Plano TX eye clinic has the skills, experience and products necessary to provide hard to fit contacts.

How Your Optometrist Evaluates Your Contact Lens Needs

Every contact lens fitting begins with the same contact lens exam -- and this is where your Eye Gallery optometrist (Dr. Harrison, Dr. Perry or Dr. Brooks) determines whether you can wear ordinary contact lenses or might require hard to fit contacts instead. Issues to take into consideration include:

  • Dry eye syndrome - Dry eyes can make wearing ordinary contacts uncomfortable and unhealthy

  • Giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC) - This irritation is caused by proteins that typically accumulate on contact lenses

  • Keratoconus - Keratoconus is a weakness of the corneas that causes them to bulge outward in a cone shape, making it impossible to correct the resulting vision problems with ordinary soft contacts.

  • Astigmatism and/or presbyopia - These complex refractive errors can't be fully corrected with ordinary lenses. Severe refractive errors may also require stronger correction than standard soft contacts can provide.

Scleral Contacts, Multifocals and Other Options

If you do have a hard to fit condition, we can steer you toward the perfect contact lens option for your needs. For instance:

  • Strong prescriptions will do better with RGP (rigid gas permeable) lenses, which maintain their shape for the most accurate vision correction possible.

  • Keratoconus patients can benefit from scleral contacts that extend right over the entire cornea in a perfect sphere and rest on the white of the eye, completely bypassing the irregular corneal shape.

  • If you have presbyopia, we can give you multifocal lenses that correct multiple distances (or monofocals with a different distance correction for each eye).

  • Toric lenses are made so that they stay put and don't rotate when you blink. This is a critical feature for correcting the individual corneal defects of astigmatism.

  • If you have GPC or dry eye syndrome, the answer may be as simple as using eye drops alongside your contacts. (We may also recommend single-use disposable lenses for eyes sensitive to protein accumulation, or moisture-retaining hydrogel lenses for dry eyes.)
