Your Plano, Texas Optometrists for Dry Eye Treatmentdry eye treatment plano tx

At Eye Gallery, our Plano, Texas optometrist are committed to providing each patient with the highest standard of eye and vision care. Whether you meet with Dr. Harrison, Dr. Perry, or Dr. Brooks during your appointment, you can always rest assured you're in good hands. At our office, we diagnose and treat any number of eye diseases and eye conditions. One of the more common conditions we see and treat is that of dry eyes.

Causes and Symptoms of Dry Eyes

Dry eyes can affect people of any age, though there are some specific factors that can make you more likely to suffer from this condition. For example, some people on prescription medications are more prone to dry eyes, as this is a relatively common side effect of many types of medications. Furthermore, those who wear contact lenses may also be more susceptible to dry eyes, since wearing the wrong type of contact lens can cause the eyes to dry out more easily.

People with certain medical conditions may also be more likely to suffer from dry eyes. Specifically, those with diabetes, certain forms of arthritis, and lupus are all likely to have dry eyes.

Of course, environmental factors can also lead to dry eyes, such as eye allergies, low moisture content in the air, and even smoky conditions.

Not sure if you have dry eyes? We recommend coming into our eye care clinic for an evaluation, especially if you experience one or more of the following dry eye symptoms:

  • excessive redness or watery eyes
  • feeling of sand or grittiness stuck in one or both eyes
  • persistent itchy eyes

Treatment Options for Dry Eyes

The good news is that if you suffer from dry eyes, there are treatment options available to you. For starters, we can prescribe medicated eye drops here in our office that can be effective in helping you find relief from your symptoms. These are especially effective for those suffering from dry eyes related to allergies. It is also worth noting that these medicated drops are much different than store-bought eye drops that you may have already tried with no success.

Depending on the cause of your dry eyes, changes to your lifestyle may also be recommended. For example, during dryer months of the year, you may want to consider using a humidifier in your home to increase moisture. Or, if you're wearing contact lenses that are causing irritation and dryness, we may recommend switching to a contact lens type made especially for people with dry or sensitive eyes.

There are also surgical options available for dry eye relief, though we tend to fall back on these only as a last resort and after other treatment options have been exhausted.
