Lasik FAQs in Plano
The LASIK surgical procedure reduces or eliminates the need for contact lenses or eyeglasses. The doctor uses a specialized laser to reshape the cornea, using computer controls for exact specifications, in order to correct farsightedness, astigmatism, or nearsightedness. At Eye Gallery, our optometrist offers pre- and post-operative care for patients who choose to get LASIK. These patients naturally have a lot of questions about the procedure. Here are some of the most common ones:
Who is a Good Candidate for LASIK?
You'll consult with our optometrist to find out if LASIK is right for you. Generally, patients for the procedure should be at least 18 years old, should have healthy eyes with no developing diseases, and should have had the same corrective prescription for the last year. If you are pregnant, nursing, or have certain medical conditions it's best not to choose LASIK.
Will LASIK Give Me Perfect Vision?
While no one can predict the exact results of any LASIK procedure, a very large percentage of our patients go on with normal tasks like driving, watching television, or playing sports without glasses after their procedure.
Is the LASIK Procedure Painful?
During the procedure you'll be administered anesthetic eye drops to numb your eyes, so you won't feel anything at all except some possible light pressure in the eye area. You'll also be given a mild sedative to help you to remain calm, which will help you to remain pain-free. After the procedure is done, your eyes may feel scratchy or irritated. Almost all of our patients feel back to normal after a short nap. You'll receive eye drops to help with the healing process in the first days after the procedure.
What is the Recovery Period Like?
You should restrict your behavior in certain areas, such as contact sports or swimming, right after the procedure. Our doctor will advise you about things to avoid that might delay or prevent proper healing. In most cases you'll be able to get back to your normal schedule the very next day. Your vision will clear within 48 hours after the procedure, and will likely become even sharper in the months to come.
